One of the many lessons we have learned over our 35+ years as animal agents is the nurturing and healing potential of animals.

Far beyond companionship, the bond between humans and animals can be harnessed to unlock a world of mental, emotional and even physical benefits for people of all stripes, ages and preferences.

What is animal therapy?

Every pet owner can attest to the instant sense of calm they feel when they stroke their furry or feathered friend. Animal therapy, also known as pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy, hones in on this unique connection that humans have with animals.

During animal therapy sessions, specially-trained animals are incorporated into a treatment plan designed by a therapist. These sessions can involve petting, walking or simply spending time in the presence of a calming animal.

While there can be variations depending on specific needs and programs, the most common animals used in animal therapy include:

What are the benefits of animal therapy?

B E N E F I T S

Emotional Wellbeing

Animals offer a safe space for individuals undergoing therapy. Their unconditional love and non-judgmental presence foster feelings of comfort and security.  They can be a comforting outlet for expressing emotions.

 Socialisation

For those struggling with social skills or isolation, animal therapy provides a bridge to meaningful connection.  Interacting with therapy animals can improve communication, empathy, and interpersonal relationships.

Stress Relief Oasis

Studies show that simply being around animals lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation. Petting or cuddling animals further enhances well-being and reduces tension.

Physical Health

The benefits of animal therapy extend beyond the emotional realm.  Activities like walking or grooming therapy animals can encourage physical activity and improve motor skills, contributing to overall physical health.

Who can benefit from animal therapy?

Animal therapy isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, but a personalised intervention that can benefit anyone and everyone. It has been successfully integrated into treatment plans for a wide range of conditions, including:

 Depression and anxiety disorders

 Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

 Autism spectrum disorders

 Substance abuse

 Chronic illnesses

 Alzheimer's disease and dementia
